the bottom land
desired for its bountiful yield
ever fresh with earthworms
she is the breath of
my fragile body of bones
a joyous puzzle left unresolved
strength and softness
beyond imagination
enticing mystification
yet reachable
a universe of
unlimited beauty
all pay tribute to
her charms and countence
bountiful and vast
her fertility
"Mom" she is called
by her community
God-given is
her maternal instinct
down-to-earth is
her wisdom and nurturing
her humanity and goodness
a waiting room
soon under a sedation drug
finally here we are
let it begin
the overture is over
down in the bottom
ever a bountiful yield
earthworms turn the soil
the day was just right
the string made a graceful arc
from the black kite
the boy wanted to fight his kite
it dived and soared to his delight
he challenged another lad
to that lad's delight
they had a furious dog fight
neither would win
as the strings got crossed
both kites dived
to the earth and became
a pile of paper and balsa
into silence died the last note
the roar of applause
a demand for an encore
more was not to come
it could not have ended
in any other way
around the beltway
chasing red tail lights in exhaust smoke
slow drivers move right
eighteen wheelers ride ever so close
diesel air horns blare cars away
a jug of clotted cream
and lumpy portridge
scones and orange jam
bacon, kippers, and sausages
dressed to the nines
in jophurs, leather boots.
riding crops at the ready
gently touching ones' thighs
amid the smell
of horse droppings.
and unclean stables
the baying of restless hounds
amid the "tally-ho"
of the huntsmaster
off they go after
a ragged starved fox
a blood thirsty lot
to sate yet another appetite
